Itineraries recommended are shown
the traveller most in the least,
unhurried amount of time. Such
itineraries can easily be
lengthened, or shortened, according
to personal preferences.
The major cultural sights of the
Northeast are the several ruined
Khmer temples. Four of the best of
these may be comfortably visited on
a three-day trip from Bangkok,
basing yourself at Nakhon Ratchasima.
Phimai and Phanom Wan may be visited
on one day; Phanom Rung and Muang
Tam on the next.
For a full appreciation of the
region, a week's circular tour is
recommended, travelling from Bangkok
to Nakhon Ratchasima, on through
Buriram and Surin to Ubon
Ratchathani, then following the
banks of the Mekong river from
Mukdahan to Nakhon Phanom and Nong
Khai.
From Nong Khai the route heads south
again to Udon Thani, Khon Kaen and
back to Nakhon Ratchasima. Travel
can he by public transport, though
it is perhaps best to have a Bangkok
travel agent tailor a tour by car or
minibus according to your time and
preferences.
When planning a NorthÂeast itinerary
it is advisable to check the
festival calendar. It may he
possible to arrange your trip to
coincide with one of these colourful
events so indicative of the region's
quintessential character.
